Edge computing in simple terms is transferring less data and computation in the cloud or a central system and alternatively, processing it closer to the source of the data. It is centered on improving the flow of data as opposed to eliminating the cloud entirely.
It can improve speed & reduce latency to improve the UX because the less time it takes to process the data, the more useful it is. Performing analysis at the edge, where the data is collected makes the data more relevant and actionable.

It improves security, when you administer and process your data amongst multiple tools, you are also exposing it to multiple threats. Although the attack surface is larger for potential hackers, edge computing lowers the impact on the organization as a whole. When there is less data being transferred, there is less data to interrupt. It can also aid with local compliance issues, data sovereignty, and privacy issues.
Edge computing can also be advantageous financially. All data is not the same, and therefore does not have the same value. Yet, the same amount of money is spent on transporting, managing, and securing all data. Edge computing permits you to arrange your data from a business standpoint. By keeping as much data as you can at the edge, you lower the need for expensive bandwidth to connect all of the locations, allowing you to lower your operating costs. Edge computing also helps reduce redundant data. Data created and collected at the edge needs to be stored there temporarily and then stored again in the cloud, creating redundancy- when you can reduce redundant storage, you can reduce redundant costs.
